“FOUNDATIONS OF UNITY”
PHILIPPIANS 2:1-4

INTRODUCTION: Unity within the churchis one of the most important dynamics for spiritual growth and accomplishing God’s will. However, one person said you can be unified without unity or oneness. For example, tie two cats together by their tails and throw them over a clothesline. They are unified, but they definitely do not have unity. I think you understand what he meant.
How important is unity? One of Jesus’ last prayers for the disciples and for all Christians was to be one. (John 17:9-11, 20, 21) Unity is the idea of existing and moving together in harmony as one. According to this passage, the reason for Christian unity is so that people will believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior. Our unity is for the benefit of those who have not yet believed.
One pastor gave three important ways that the church should be unified. First, God’s church should be unified in spirit. That spirit is the Spirit of Jesus Christ. It is a spirit of being a servant. Paul wrote in Philippians 2:5-8, “5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Jesus put people before all of His glory and honor. He was God’s Son in Heaven, but He gave it up to come to earth to serve man and to give His life so that man could be saved and go to Heaven. The spirit of unity is generally a spirit of serving one to another. All of us should submit to God and one another like Jesus submitted and gave Himself.
Also, we should be unified in purpose. Our one purpose is to glorify God as His church. We give glory to God when we live righteous lives, when we praise Him, when we prayerfully trust in Him, and when we do His work.
Also, we should be unified in action. Our action is the commission that God gave in Matthew 28:18, 19. (Matthew 28:18, 19) We should be telling the Gospel, baptizing people, and making followers of Jesus Christ. That’s what we do.
In today’s passage, Paul continues his thoughts from Philippians 1. (Philippians 2:1-4) Paul is encouraging the Church in Philippi to be one, to be unified. While the Philippian Church was doing well, maybe they struggled in the area of unity. Remember, you can have union and not be unified. In other words, you can be doing a lot of good things and not have unity.
For example, two little boys had a wagon. One of the boys pushed it up a small hill. Then, they rode down the hill together. It was time to push the wagon back up the hill. Neither one wanted to push the wagon up the hill. Finally, the mother said, “You both ride in the wagon. Why don’t you push the wagon up the hill together?” The two boys were a union; they were there with the wagon together. However, they were not unified. The boys listened to their mother and pushed the wagon up the hill together. They became one in heart.
Sometimes, we may be part of the union of this Church; in other words, we are part of the body of believers. However, due to circumstances in life we do not have unity with God’s church. In other words, due to personal circumstances or personal opinion we are not one with the church. Because we can see and understand our own perspective better than anyone else’s, it is easy to lose our oneness with one another. One pastor said that we are sometimes like a porcupines in a snowstorm. We need each other to keep warm, but we prick each other when we get too close. If we were honest, we all have pricked someone. I’ve done it.
In today’s passage, Paul is encouraging the Philippians to keep their oneness because it is so important for the spiritual growth and walk of individual believers and for the entire church. As Jesus implied in John 17, the church’s oneness has a direct influence on unbelievers. Today, I would like us to study Paul’s teaching on the reasons to be one and how we should accomplish being one. First, let’s pray.

MAIN POINTS

I. FIRST, PAUL GIVES US A NUMBER OF GOOD REASONS TO BE OF ONE HEART. (VERSES 1 & 2)
A. Interpretation: First, Paul says, “therefore”. It means for the benefit of that which I said up until now. What did Paul say? (Philippians 1:27-30) Remember from the message about this passage, we are “citizens of the commonwealth of the Gospel.” In other words, our mission is to spread the Gospel message. And we should do it without fear. In 2:1, Paul says therefore. In other words, “in order to be this kind of people,” and then Paul continues to give us various reasons to be of one heart.
1. The first reason to strive to be of one heart is that Jesus has encouraged us to do so. We already read from John 17. It was part of Jesus’ last prayer for His disciples and future believers before He went to the cross. Also, Jesus Himself was one with the Father. Jesus wants us to be of one heart. That’s a good reason, isn’t it?
2. The second reason to strive to be of one heart is the “comfort of love”. This is referring to the support that we receive from our Christian brothers and sisters. It is ultimately from Jesus Christ Himself since He teaches us to be that way. The comfort from Christian brothers and sisters is a powerful reason to be of one heart.
3. The third reason to strive to be of one heart is “fellowship with the Spirit”. We do not create the fellowship that we have with one another. Fellowship is the essence of our common life in Christ. In other words, it comes from the same Spirit that lives in each of us that have trusted in Christ as Savior. We have a deep bond through God’s Spirit dwelling in each of us. The Greek word for fellowship is. It is a special word for us Christians. Fellowship through the Holy Spirit is another good reason to be one in heart.
4. The fourth reason to strive to be of one heart is tenderness and compassion. The actual word that Paul used for affection is “inward parts.” It means literally the heart and lungs area. It was a word to describe one’s feelings. It indicates expressive love. It is the idea of loving brothers and sisters like Jesus Christ loved us. This kind of love and mercy indicate deep feelings that Christians naturally have for one another. They also indicate the manifestation of those feelings through serving one another and praying for one another.

B. Application: Paul, then, continues in verse 2 and tells the Philippian Christians that oneness in heart in the church certainly gives him joy. Every pastor loves for their church to have unity, to be moving together as one. The question is how do we have unity?

A.(解釈)

SECOND, PAUL TEACHES US THAT THE ESSENCE OF ONENESS IN HEART IS HUMILITY. (VERSES 3 & 4)
A. Interpretation: In humility thinking that others are better than yourselves is “the linchpin that guarantees the success of the Christian community,” one pastor said. It is certainly not what the world teaches us. The world teaches that we should put ourselves first. The American government teaches that if you have a house, two cars, and various things, you will be happy. In other words, things make you happy. It is egocentric. Furthermore, I was recently talking to a high school student in Japan. This person told me that in the Japanese textbook on Health, it is written that life is about making oneself happy. This idea that we should put ourselves first is found in the first chapter of Genesis when Adam and Eve ate of the prohibited fruit. They wanted eternal life and thought that they could get it their own way. So, the idea of living for oneself in order to get happiness is not a new way of thinking. On the contrary, it is man’s way of thinking. However, God’s way of thinking is that Christians in humility think of others better than themselves. In other words, we should give more consideration to others than we give ourselves.

So, verse 3 teaches us how to view others; verse 4 teaches us how to relate to others. This verse teaches us that we should consider not only our own needs but also the needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ. In other words, we think about what each other needs. We ask about those needs, and we try to help! Again, this does not mean that you completely ignore your own needs. Paul said, “not ONLY your own things.”

B. Illustration: Sometimes we are taught the valuable lesson of unity from unlikely sources. There was a story about a 100 meter race. When the starter raised the gun and said, "On your mark, get set ..." it looked like every other hundred-meter dash. The contestants were lined up in the starting blocks. The crowd was on the edge of their chairs in suspended anticipation.
When the starter fired the gun, the contestants sprang out of the starting blocks, and even the casual observer could tell something was different. This was the Special Olympics. It was special because the contestants were developmentally and physically disabled.
It was special for a far greater reason than that. It was special because of the way that hundred-meter dash was run. The runners moved down the track shoulder-to-shoulder. Suddenly one of the young women sprawled headlong on the track and turned over in some amount of pain and embarrassment.
The rest of the contestants moved on for ten or fifteen meters. Without any communication among themselves, they all stopped, turned around, and jogged back to their fallen friend. They picked her up off the track, comforted her, and then arm in arm they ran together to the finish line. Those runners would rather finish together than win the race individually.

C. Application: When I heard that story, I thought of all of us. Isn't that really what the Church of Christ is? All of us have spiritual, emotional, and relational disabilities. We might look as though we're fine on the outside, but if you are here long enough you can see that we are not perfect. We will fall sometime. We will fail sometime. However, we should comfort one another. We should love one another. We should think of others as better than ourselves. And we should consider not only our own needs but also the needs of others.

What a great lesson on humility from the Special Olympic athletes. I think that we all want to be truly humble. True humbleness is not just bowing and honoring others outwardly. Jesus gave us the example. The God-man washed the feet of His disciples. The result is that those disciples were of one heart with Christ until their deaths. Have you washed anyone’s feet lately? Don’t worry; I don’t want you to wash my feet. However, we can spiritually wash each other’s feet. We can love each other with the same love that Christ loved His disciples and us. Make your actions and your heart one and serve one another. That kind of humility leads to unity that keeps us together in all kinds of difficulties.

A.(解釈)

CONCLUSION: In conclusion, there are various reasons for us to strive to be one heart. First, Jesus wants us to be one. Second, we receive the comfort from the love of our brothers and sisters. Third, we have special fellowship through the Spirit of God that dwells in each of us. Fourth, we receive and give the same love that we received from Jesus Christ when He gave His life for us on the cross. How do we become one heart? We do it by thinking of others in humility as better than ourselves and by meeting each other’s needs whatever they may be. We pick each other up when we fall down.
The unity that we can have in Christ is so special. It is not anything that you will find in this world naturally. People that do not believe in the one true God cannot ultimately be led by anything except their own will, their own desires. However, we Christians are led by Jesus Christ! And Jesus Christ is the best kind of good. He loved us with the greatest love. His is the best path of life and the only path to Heaven. We Christians should rejoice together and strive to be of one heart. Let’s pray.
