“CITIZENS OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF THE GOSPEL”
PHILIPPIANS 1:27-30

INTRODUCTION: Sometimes, we can forget our mission or be distracted from doing our mission. There is an old story about a lighthouse keeper who worked on a rocky stretch of coastline. Once a month he would receive a new supply of oil to keep the light burning so that ships could safely sail near the rocky coast. One night, though, a woman from a nearby village came and begged him for some oil to keep her family warm. Another time a father asked for some to use in his lamp. Another man needed to lubricate a wheel. Since all the requests seemed legitimate, the lighthouse keeper tried to please everyone and grant the requests of all.
Toward the end of the month, he noticed his supply of oil was dangerously low. Soon it was gone, and one night the light on the lighthouse went out. As a result, that evening several ships were wrecked and countless lives were lost. When the authorities investigated, the man was very apologetic. He told them he was just trying to be helpful with the oil. Their reply to his excuses, however, was simple and to the point: ‘You were given oil for one purpose, and one purpose only—to keep that light burning!’
A church faces a similar commission. There is no end to the demands placed on a church's time and resources. As a result, the foundational purposes of a church must remain the priority.
We as God’s people praise and glorify God individually and corporately. We have fellowship with one another. We encourage one another. We study God’s Word together and pray together. However, we do have one goal, one mission. That mission is to share the Gospel with the whole world. Why? First, it is because Jesus commanded it. It was His final command to the apostles, and Christians have continued spreading the Gospel since that time. Second, it is because above ALL things the world needs to hear the Gospel message. That Jesus died for us sinners and was resurrected on the third day and ascended into Heaven is the most important message in history. Like the lighthouse keeper, people’s eternal life depends on us sharing the Gospel. Paul knew this. Let’s read our passage. (Philippians 1:27-30)
Remember, Paul is facing death. He sits in a prison in Rome, and soon he will stand before the authorities to defend himself. In verse 27, Paul tells the Philippian Christians “Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ.” The meaning here is to live as a citizen of the commonwealth of the Gospel. It means that the Philippian Christians have received the Gospel themselves. Each of them has received Jesus Christ as their Savior. In other words, they believe that Jesus died so that their sins would be forgiven. They have joined in this special family of Gospel believers. And when you join this family, your life changes. You live differently than you did before. The people of Philippi were people who were proud of their Roman citizenship. However, Paul indicated that there was a more important citizenship for them to consider, namely their citizenship in Heaven. More than their earthly citizenship, they were to live according to their heavenly citizenship, in other words their citizenship that came with believing the Gospel message.
Wakaba Church is a little unique among churches in Japan. Wakaba is a Japanese church. However, you have an American pastor for now. We have many Filipino Christians attending. We have had people from Brazil, China, Korea, and other countries attend this church. We all come from different backgrounds, and we may be very proud of our backgrounds. However, there is something that we should take pride in more than our own countries and our cultures. That is that we are citizens of Heaven, all believers in the one true God who loves us and sent His own Son to die for us. We can sometimes get frustrated with one another because of various differences. There even may be a tendency to think that one country or one culture is better than another or that I am better than another person. That kind of thinking is very dangerous and not based on Biblical teaching. We are all equally sinners in desperate need of God’s salvation. Furthermore, we fight against the enemy, the ruler of this world. His name is Satan and he is a formidable foe. To continue our mission of spreading the Gospel message, there is a certain lifestyle for Gospel-believers. In other words, we should live a certain way that is different than the world. Paul teaches that to the Philippians in verses 27-30. Today I want us to study the lifestyle of Gospel citizens. Let’s pray.

 MAIN POINTS

I. FIRST, WE SHOULD UNITE IN LIVING THE CHRISTIAN LIFE AND SPREADING THE GOSPEL MESSAGE. (VERSE 27)
A. Interpretation: Paul tells the Philippians to “stand fast in one spirit.” “Stand fast” conveys the idea of firmness or steadfastness, or unflinching courage like soldiers who determinedly refuse to leave their posts irrespective of how severely the battle rages. “In one spirit” indicates all being under the influence of the Spirit of God. The phrase “with one mind striving together” indicates working not against each other but with each other with the same goal in mind.

This is an obvious call to unity. Unity in the church is necessary so believers can work together effectively, as a team, carrying out the will of God. Specifically, the church's task is to proclaim and spread the Gospel message.

B. Illustration: We can see illustrations of the effectiveness of unity in nature and many other places. As far as trees go, the huge redwood trees in California are amazing. They are the largest living things on earth and the tallest trees in the world. Some of them reach to be 200 – 275 feet high, their trunks may be 8 – 12 feet in diameter and may be over 2500 years old. The largest of its kind in Northern California stands at 368 feet tall. You would think that something that large would need a massive root system reaching far into the ground to keep them standing tall but they don’t. Redwoods have a rather shallow root system especially when compared to that of the Mighty Oak. Instead, the roots are intertwined with others, each tree helping to hold the others erect and in place. If one of them was off by itself, it would quite likely fall. They need the others for survival.

C. Application: That is how we are to stand, like the redwood tree. We may not be strong individually. If alone, we may fall. However, we are strong when we are one in the Spirit of God!

That means that first we must be united in our mission. Our mission is to spread the Gospel message. When we do the work here on Sundays or during the week, we must remember that we are working to tell others the Gospel. Whether we are teaching someone God’s Word, teaching an English class, praying together, making the lunch on Sunday, no matter what we are doing, we must remember that it is all for the furtherance of the Gospel. The enemy is Satan and sin; Satan influences the people of this world. The only effective weapon against Satan’s influences is God’s Word and especially the Gospel message. Paul tells us in Romans 1:16 that the Gospel is “the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth.” Therefore, being good is not even enough, coming to church will not save a person. Only believing the Gospel saves! We all must believe that. When we believe, we must then listen to the influence of God’s Spirit and be united in our effort to spread the Gospel.

Second, we must support one another. We must be tied to one another. If we cannot support one another for some reason, then we are already a hindrance to the Gospel message. Unity is important if we are to spread the Gospel. We cannot do it when we cannot support one another.

A.[解釈]

II. SECOND, WE THE PEOPLE OF WAKABA NEED TO LOSE OUR FEAR OF SUFFERING FOR THE SAKE OF THE GOSPEL. (VERSES 28-30)
A. Interpretation: As indicated in verse 28, there were enemies of the believers. The Philippian Christians knew that there were opponents of their faith. As indicated in verse 30, some of the Philippian Church members had seen Paul’s suffering. Possibly, the Philippian Christians were facing persecution like Paul had endured. Paul tells them in verse 28 to not be terrified by those people. In other words, do not be threatened by them. Then, Paul explains that their suffering for Christ is a sign that you will be saved. In other words, it is a sign that you are a real Christian. And it is a sign that those who persecute them will be punished. Paul explains further that suffering is something given to Christians.

B. Illustration: It is one of the biggest questions among humanity. Why would a good God allow people to suffer? Listen to the following quote from an old pastor. The greatest sermons I have ever heard were not preached from pulpits but from sickbeds. The deepest truths of God’s Word have often been taught by those humble souls who have gone through the seminary of affliction.
The most cheerful people I have met, with few exceptions, have been those who’ve had the least sunshine and the most pain and suffering in their lives. The most grateful people I have ever known were not those who had traveled a pathway of roses all their lives, but those who were confined to their homes, some to their beds, and had learned to depend on God.
The gripers, on the other hand, are usually those who have the least to complain about. The men and women who are the most cheerful and the most grateful for the blessings of Almighty God are often those who have gone through the greatest trials.
The reason I quote about those Christians who have suffered sickness is because I believe it to be the same of those who have suffered persecution for being a Christian. They are usually people who do not complain, but are thankful to God. They love God in a way that I cannot yet understand.

C. Application: Therefore, suffering, whether in affliction or at the hand of the enemy, does have meaning. We might not completely understand the meaning at the time, but we should trust that God does. Furthermore, we should with Paul and the apostles be grateful to be able to suffer with our Savior. That is difficult to think, but when we suffer for Jesus Christ in the midst of the spiritual battle, it draws us closer to one another and to God. Furthermore, the more we suffer for Christ, the more resolve we get to stand for Christ.

I encourage you to take the first steps of suffering. Begin by praying with your family, having devotions, being a Christian in your home. Then, move forward by telling others about your faith. Don’t be afraid. Those that you are afraid of also deserve to hear the truth of the Gospel, don’t they?

A.[解釈]

CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the primary mission of the church is to spread the Gospel message. Paul tells the Philippians and us to be unified in our work and to not be afraid of the enemy.
Remember, we have the most important message in the world. It is the only message that has the power to save. It is the simple message that you are a sinner in God’s eyes, you were born a sinner. However, while you are a sinner to God, God loves you and sent His Son Jesus to take your punishment. Jesus came to this world, lived among people, loved them, and then was crucified. However, Jesus did not stay in the grave. On the third day, He miraculously rose from the dead. He has paid our sin-debt to God. You can have your sins forgiven and go to Heaven by truly believing that Jesus died for your sin. That is our message. One person said it this way. “The world has many religions; but it has but one Gospel.” Let’s with one heart under the influence of the Spirit of God, and without any fear, do the work of telling the world the Gospel message. Let’s pray.
