“Sacrifice and Blessing”

Mark 12:41-44

Introduction:

For many preachers, one of the most difficult things to preach about is money!  And at many missions’ conferences and missions meetings, oftentimes one of the goals is to try to raise money for missionaries, essentially for God’s mission.  It isn’t the only thing.  The church is being asked, “What will you do to tell each person in this world the saving message of the Gospel?”  The church is being encouraged to spiritually grow.  However, how a Christian uses his/her money is a very important part of spiritual growth.  Jesus knew that.  Jesus talked a lot about money.  One pastor said that sixteen of Jesus’ thirty-eight parables, about 42 percent, were about how to use one’s money and possessions.  One Bible commentator estimates that in the Gospels, 1 out of 10 verses (288 in total) talks directly about the subject of money.  (Howard L. Dayton, Jr.)

So today, I want to talk to you a little about money.  However, it is not just about money, it’s about so much more!  Let’s turn to our passage, Mark 12:41-44.  (Mark 12:41-44)

〔　導　入　〕　

　多くの説教者にとって、最も難しい事は、お金についての説教です！そして、多くの伝道カンファレンス（会議）、伝道集会の根底には、神様の使命のためにということで、時として、宣教献金を集めるということが一つの目的となります。　
　それだけではありません。教会は、問われています。「この世の一人ひとりに福音のメッセージを伝える為に何をしますか？」と。　教会は、霊的に成長する事を奨励されています。しかしながら、一クリスチャンが、彼の、または彼女のお金をどのように使うかということは、霊的成長にとても重要となります。
　イエス様は、それをご存知でした。イエス様は、お金について沢山話されました。　ある牧師は、およそ４２％、３８の譬えの中の１６は、人のお金と所有物の使い方についてであると言いました。
　ある聖書の解説者（ハワードL.デイトン,ジュニア）は、全部で２８８節から構成されている四福音書の中で、１０分の１の節が、直接的にお金に関することに言及していると評価しています。
　そこで、今日は、お金について少し話したいと思います。
　しかしながら、単なるお金についてではなくて、もっと深い内容です。
　マルコ１２章４１－４４節を見てみましょう

Jesus previously was in a certain part of the temple courtyard in Jerusalem, probably the perimeter, talking to a crowd of people about the scribes, the religious leaders.  Jesus was admonishing the religious leaders for their sinful ways.  Then, Jesus goes to the women’s courtyard.  It was so-named not because only women could enter, but because women could not go beyond this point.  In this rectangular-shaped area of about 20 meters squared, there were thirteen offering receptacles around next to three walls of the room in which the people put their offerings.  According to tradition, written on each receptacle was an inscription that indicated what the offering was for.  Most of the offerings were required by law for the maintenance of the temple, tithes, offerings to purchase actual animal sacrifices, etc.  In those days, not everyone took care of sheep, goats, etc., so purchasing one’s sacrifice became necessary.  A few of the receptacles were for free will offerings.  In other words, the offerings deposited in these four receptacles were not required by the Law of Moses.  Those offering receptacles were for giving an offering of thanks to God.

So, Jesus with His disciples sat down across from the treasury and watched the people put in their offerings.  Have you ever just stopped and watched people do something?  Sometimes you can learn things from just observing people.  Jesus saw something.  People coming to the temple to contribute offerings was an everyday thing.  What Jesus and the disciples were watching was nothing out of the ordinary.  However, while they were watching something extraordinary happened.  As per usual, people came and put in their offerings in the receptacles.  Among those that gave were some wealthy people.  They put in much.  Good!  However, among those that came was a poor, pitiful widow woman.  We do not know if she was young or old.  When I read this, I imagine she was old, maybe walking with a cane.  Her clothes certainly would indicate that she was poor.  She slowly walked up to one of the receptacles and put in two copper coins.  It is difficult to say precisely how much the woman gave.  Mark tells us that the worth is one コドラント.  It was maybe 100 or 200 yen in today’s money.  With it, the woman could maybe buy a small meal

Then, Jesus surprises the disciples with a radical teaching.  The widow woman who put in the two copper coins gave more than everyone, Jesus told them.  This must have been a big surprise to the disciples.  In most people’s thinking, Jesus’ teaching does not make sense!  However, in God’s way of thinking it is completely logical.  That is because the woman gave everything.  Only Jesus could have known that because He is the Son of God.  The widow woman gave all!

Furthermore, money was important to everyone just like it is now.  Money is the primary way that we buy and sell things.  It the essential means by which we conduct our daily lives.  One pastor said it this way:  “Money is who we are, it is what we do, it is our very life, our very self.  So when we deal with these issues, we are not dealing with thousand yen bills and fifty yen coins.  We are dealing with the very essence of who we are as people, what our priorities are, and what we really care most about.”  It is the one thing that we most need to live.  And that is why Jesus talks about it so much.  If one can trust God with all his/her money, then one probably trusts God completely.  In this passage, there are two primary comparisons that Jesus makes.  These two comparisons teach us what it really means to trust in God completely.  That is what I want to talk about today.  Let’s pray.

Ⅰ.はじめに、イエス様は、やもめの献金と、宗教指導者の献金を比較されました。（４３節４４節）

A（解釈）
　イエス様と弟子達は、様々な社会階級の人が来て献金をするのを見ていました。　中産階級の人々、お金持ち、それから貧しい人々もいたでしょう。
　それぞれが献金をしました。イエス様が言われた様に、数人のお金持ちはたくさん捧げました、何人かは少し捧げました。
　そして、最終的に、その貧しいやもめは２枚のレプタ銅貨を捧げました。
　どうしてイエス様は、この貧しい女性は誰よりも捧げたと言われたのでしょうか。
　おそらく、他の人々は、レプタ銅貨２枚以上の献金をしたでしょう。
　たしかに多額の献金をした人もいました。
　お金は、神殿の中にもっと多くの部屋を作るのに、修理をするのに必要でした。
　出席者も増えていましたから、椅子や、テーブルもおそらく必要だったでしょう。
　これらのものを、２枚の価値のない硬貨で、どうやって買うことができるでしょうか。その上、この女性は、貯金の重要性を教わる必要がありました。不慮の時に、備える必要があります。勿論、皮肉ですが！

　イエス様は、だれも知らない何かを知っておられました。
　イエス様は、それぞれの人が献金する前から、どれくらいのお金を持っていたかを知っておられました。
　それで、イエス様と弟子たちは、それぞれの人が、何を入れるかを見ていました。　そして、この貧しいやもめは、「あるだけ全てを入れました。
　生活費の全てをです。」割合を比較すると良くわかります。
　要するに、彼女は生活費の全てを持ってきて、入れたのです。
　他の人は、生活費の一部だけ捧げました。
　その女性は、全てを入れたのです！

B（実例・適用）
　そして、それは、神様が私たちに期待していることです。
　神様は、私たちの全て、そして最上の物をご自身に捧げて欲しいのです。
　お金に限らず、賜物、時間、何でも神様は私たちに捧げて欲しいのです。
　ご存知のとおり、神様は、私たちがいくら捧げたかを見ておられません。
　神様は、私たちがどれくらい犠牲を払ったかを見られるのです。
　多くの人々は、主に(神様に)素晴らしい捧げ物をすることができます。
　しかしながら、主(神様に)に全てを捧げたいと思っているのはごくわずかな人です。
でも、イエス様は、深いところを比較されます。
第二のポイントに進みましょう。

II.        Second, Jesus compares the widow’s love of God to the religious leaders’ love of things.  (verses 38-40)

A.                Interpretation:  The scribes loved to look great in front of the people.  They had risen to the top of society through education and endeavor.  And they thought that they were important.  They were proud of their accomplishments. They loved the things that they could buy with their money.  Ironically, the religious leaders somehow unjustly took widows’ houses and probably used the money to buy the things they loved.  They loved the things of this world.
However, the widow, what did she love?  Jesus said that while the others gave out of their abundance, the widow, even though she was extremely poor, gave “her whole livelihood.”  What did she love?  This passage indicates that the widow loved God.  She did not just love God; she loved Him with all her heart!

B.        Illustration/Application:  I’ve seen and heard of this kind of woman before.  My grandmother was this kind woman.  Her whole life, she gave everything to God.  She gave her money, time, and talents.  She also gave me!  When I was very young, my parents were divorced.  Because of that our family was very poor, and we eventually had to move in with my grandparents for a period of time.  At that time, I became very close to my grandmother.  After we moved into our own house, my grandmother and grandfather sacrificed so that my siblings and I could attend a Christian School.  I did eventually go to a public school, but the Christian education had great value for me.  Throughout my young years, I was very close to my grandmother.  I saw how she gave everything to the Lord.  For example, for over twenty-five years, she and the pastor’s mother every week went visiting sick church members and people who visited church.  She never had any new things.  When I told her that I will go to Japan as a missionary, she told me that she had been praying since I was young that I would become a preacher of God’s Word.  She loved me so much, but she even gave me over to the Lord.  Finally, when she died she had but a few things with only sentimental value（感情的価値のある物しか）.  Throughout her life, she faithfully gave all she had to God.  She died on April 6^th, 2011.  I was in Tohoku when she died.

However, even though poor herself, my grandmother did not die with sadness.  For her, she was not merely giving all that she had and giving up.  This was not defeat.  I don’t think that the widow woman was giving up either.  The widow woman was sacrificing for something far better than things or social position.  She was sacrificing for God.  It was because she loved God.  Why did she love God so much?  (1 John 4:19)  She loved God, because God loved her!  Many sacrifice to God expecting a blessing.  However, for my grandmother and for this widow woman, the sacrifice is the blessing.  For those who come before Jesus Christ, it was a promise.  For us in the church age, the promise has been realized!  God has already sacrificed far more than money and things.  God gave His own Son.  God knew that man has not kept God’s Law perfectly.  Because God is a righteous Judge, He must judge every sin.  The Bible tells us that all are guilty in God’s eyes.  However, God loved us so much that He sent His only Son Jesus.  And Jesus took our punishment when He died on the cross.  Since God loves us and has already given His own Son for us, we ought to love Him, too.  And that should be our motivation to give all to God.

B（実例・適用）
　私は、以前、この女性のような話を見、聞きしたことがあります。
　私の祖母がこの女性のような人でした。
　彼女は、全生涯、彼女が持つ全てを神様にお捧げしていました。
　お金も、時間も、賜物も、そして私までをも！わたしがとても小さい時に、私の両親は離婚しました。
　そのために、私たち家族は、とても貧乏で、結局、私たち家族は一時期、祖父母と同居することになりました。
　その当時、私は、祖母ととても親しくなりました。私たちが、自分たちの家に引っ越した後、祖父母は犠牲をはらって、私と私の兄弟姉妹をクリスチャンスクールに行かせました。
　最終的には、私は公立学校に通いましたが、クリスチャン教育は、私にとって大きな価値がありました。
　小さい頃から、私は、祖母ととても仲が良かったのです。
　祖母がどのように、主に(神様に)全てを捧げているのか見ていました。
　例えば、２５年以上もの間、彼女と牧師のお母様とで、毎週、病気の教会員や、教会を訪れたことのある人々を訪問していました。
　彼女は、新しいものは一つも持っていませんでした。
　私が、宣教師として日本に行く、と彼女に話した時、祖母は、私が小さい時からずっと、私が伝道者とになるように祈っていたと話してくれました。
　祖母は、私をとても愛していましたが、私を神様に任せたのです。
　ついに祖母が亡くなったとき、彼女の手元には、思い出のある物がいくつかあるだけでした。
　一生を通じて、彼女は忠実に神様に全てを捧げたのです。
　彼女は、２０１１年４月６日に亡くなりました。祖母が亡くなったとき、私は、東北にいました。
　私の祖母は、たとえ貧しかったとしても、悲しみのうちに亡くなったのではありません。
　彼女はただすべてを捧げてあきらめたのではありません。これは敗北ではありませんでした。
　私は、このやもめもあきらめたわけではないと思います。
　この女性は、物や、社会的地位よりもっと良い何かのために犠牲をはらいました。　彼女は、神様のために犠牲をはらったのです。それは、彼女が神様を愛していたからです。
　なぜ、彼女はそれほど神様を愛していたのでしょうか？（１ヨハネ４：１９）彼女が神様を愛したのは、神様が彼女を愛したからです！
　恵みを期待する人々は神様に対して犠牲をはらいます。
　しかしながら、私の祖母とこのやもめにとって、犠牲は祝福なのです。
　イエス・キリストに先行する人々にとって、それは約束でした。教会時代にいる私たちにとって、その約束は実現されました。
　神様はすでに、お金や物をはるかに超える犠牲をはらわれました。
　神様は、ご自身の一人子をお与え下さったのです。
　神様は、人間は神の律法を完全に守りきれないことを知っておられました。
　神様は、正しい裁判官なので、あらゆる罪を裁かなければなりません。
　聖書は、神様の目には、全ての人が罪人であると教えています。
　しかし、神様は。私たちをとても愛しておられたので、ご自身の一人子イエス様をお与えになりました。
　イエス様は十字架にお架かりになられ、私たちの罪の罰を代わりに受けて下いました。
　神様が私たちを愛して下さり、もうすでに、私たちのために一人子をお与え下さったので、私たちも、神を愛するべきなのです。
　そして、それが、神様に全てを捧げようという、私たちの動機となるべきです。

結論：In conclusion, telling the wonderful message of Jesus Christ to the whole world is a big responsibility.  However, it is more than a responsibility.  Everyone should have the opportunity to hear how much God loves them.  For those of us who have understood how much God loves us and have believed in Jesus as our Savior, the sacrifice to spread the Gospel should not be a burden.  It should be a blessing!  We love Him because He first loved us!

What should you do?  If you are a believer, I can only tell you that God wants you to trust Him and give to Him your whole heart.  However you are being led, the amount of money, time, etc. is not important.  God wants you to give all.  Maybe God is leading you to sacrifice more money for the spread of the Gospel.  Maybe God is calling you to go and preach the Gospel.  Maybe God is calling you to tell the Gospel to friends, family, etc.  Whatever it is, do it not expecting a blessing.  God has already given you the greatest blessing, His own Son Jesus.  Give to God because you love Him with all your heart!

Also, if you have not yet believed in Jesus Christ as Savior, I recommend you believe today.  The things of this world are temporary.  They might give happiness, but they will not give you eternal joy.  The things of this world will not love you.  On the other hand, God has already loved you.  He is waiting for your response.  God is waiting for you to say, “Thank you for sending Jesus to die for me.”  Jesus has already taken the punishment for your sin.  Won’t you trust Him for eternal salvation today?  Let’s pray.
